My Slalom Achievements

Slalom Achievements by Chew Lian

All these achievements came with struggles between a full time job and almost full time training. Because of the tough training that I gave myself, I was always deprived of sleep that lead to punctuality problems.

I trained myself every evening after work which is probably 6pm onwards till maximum 10pm and often turn off at 12am or later. Imagine nobody was there at the training ground and I was the only one there training no matter rain or shine because it was at the multi-storey car park always full of dog feaces...

I stopped training hard after I had gotten a job as almost full time instructor in 2009.

As you will see there are some falls during some of my performances. Falling is part and parcels of learning and living. Most of us fear of falling. Through sports, you are able to learn that falling are inevitable. But if you hire a coach before attempting, you will learn how to fall safely.

I hope you will enjoy the videos below. They are the fruits of my training.

Start from when I first started training for competition

Micro FreeStyle Championship (Rookie Challenge) 2007
3rd in Women's FreeStyle Slalom
2nd in Women's Speed Slalom

Samsung Inline Skating Festival 2007
2nd in Women's FreeStyle Slalom

There are no videos for the first 2 competitions. I can tell you they are my extrmely nervous moments. There were women who beat me and from then on I told myself that I wanted to be champion for the sake of myself and for the team. I wanted to please my manager who sponsored me with skates.

Singapore National FreeStyle Championship (SNFC) 2007

1st in Women's FreeStyle Slalom
3rd in Women's Speed Slalom

I was expecting that those women will compete with me again but to my disappointment none of them appear. So unexpectingly I became a Champion. Frankly speaking I wasn't feeling too please as my performance was not up to standard at that time. Anyway, I continued to train harder.

This song Nice To Meet You by Yanni was chosen as I was very interested in his music. I want to build up a certain relationship with my audiences telling them I am please to meet them. Since I know my skills are not too fanciful as then my skills were limited so I make use of the music and to express the feeling I bowed before the start of routine.

Singapore National FreeStyle Championship (SNFC) 2008

1st in Women's FreeStyle Slalom
3rd in Women's Speed Slalom

This point of time the boss decided to cut my pay till $300. The company was not doing well. I was devastated.

The song Bumble Bee by Maxim was chosen by a friend Raymond. I used it because I thought it was challenging and fast so I can make my move swift. But I was slowed down after all those energetic moves.

World Slalom Championship (WSC) 2008

10th in Women's FreeStyle Slalom

I got 10th after competing with 15 ladies all over the world. I never expect to be of any top positions when I came to this competition but I just tried my best. This video don't have any sounds. The music I used was Lucky. You can listen to it below.

I used this song is because of the cheerful vibes it produced. At that time I really feel that way even after my failure with coping with full time jobs. I was working with Marine Parade Town Council and I took the advantage of being near East Coast so I trained almost every day without resting.

That was the time when I put my effort into training and this is the best routine I ever have. The only thing I wished to change for this routine is to have longer hair and change the blouse. The image counts.

During this competition, I got to meet many skaters from several countries. I still remembered how I got the chance to spend some time with the Chen Chen from China. She's the best female slalom skater at that time despite har age.

Selection for WFSC 2009

Qualified for Women's Classic Slalom

Now this is the last achievement that I had for Slalom Competion. The main aim for doing this routine was to follow some elements from the Nobody dance which was so popular at that time. I was kind of crazy with that dance so in the end I only pop in the main elements and quit thinking about the slalom moves that I really want to use which were quite difficult.

I even wear the short dress to imitate Wonder Girls. Because of this video I was approached by someone from OKTO to appear on their programmes.

Since it was only selection I decided not to put in all the difficult moves. That's why some people claimed that this routine that I created are too simple for me.

It was also at this time I started to coach with Finesse Inline Skating Centre and stopped training as a competitor after this selection.

Competions are fun and tough. I would like to thank all the Team Members and Managers of Team Micro for being part of my life especially those who tried their best to assist in my training. Although I was training alone almost every day, I still have to thank those who had helped to give comments about my moves.

I have to admit that I'm not good at juggling both competing and coaching. Eversince I get in touch with coaching in 2009, I told myself that I want to be a great coach. I started getting more lessons. Coaching became everything in my life after I stopped competiting. I bear with all the negative verbals to get through with all the coaching experiences.

I put up with all the scoldings, criticisms and insults in order to built up my skills as a coach. I once know nothing about coaching. But once I get in touch with it, I will always tell myself to do the best.

After 6 years of skating experiences, 3 years of coaching experiences, I am able to guide you into becoming a good skater. Your experiences are important to me too.

Let's see if I can help you to have a fun experience with skating!

Please email me at slalom.angel@gmail.com if you are interested in taking up lessons with me.

My fees are from $20 onwards depending on the number of person in your group.
